it was worth a punt.

Yeah. But back then nobody cared (too much) as long as the tracks played were top. That's why clubbing was so much better "back then". When I got my first decks in 1997 nobody dj'ed so when they went clubbing most of the tracks they heard were for the first time, hence why it was so good. Now people complain that trance isn't as good as it was (true, to some extent) but it's quite likely their knowledge of music is far greater so when they listen to a live set they're more critical and now feel that they can probably mix better than most themselves!

Bedroom djing and production means that a set now has to be not just good, but extremely perfect and instead of it being just about the music we're all prone to concentrate on technical ability and skills too.

Still, a good trance night that's well organised with a top line-up, when packed out can still beat any other style of dance/electronic music hands down imo. (Even if it is a rare thing up North these day's).

too many wannabe DJs around and clubbers with short attention spans who always wants whats new... i must admit, i'm starting to miss the time when people when out for fun to parties and didn't care about perfect mixing or the most upfront tunes...heheh speaking of non-perfecting mixing and not so recent tunes BUT firm favourities*cough*cough*Man of Science @ Detox*cough*

Have to admit I never gave a damn about the mixing when i used to go clubbing.

For me it was all about being with my mates and having a gud time!!

Obviously the DJ should TRY to do his best with regards to mixes, but atthe end of the day a quality track beats a quality mix for me

the quality of the tunes nowadays is so much better than what it was back then. i enjoyed this set, though theres a few pretty ropey tracks in there and the production standards are not anywhere near what you hear nowadays.

i know what people are saying regarding it was better when people used to go out to have fun rather than caring about the mixing/tunes too much. theres been times at promise that ive been stood with about 2/3 other mates and between us we can name about 95% of the tunes that are played in a night, and will stand and analyse the dj's mixing, whereas 10 years ago noone really cared too much about this side of it.

the thing is nowadays though because the standards are so much higher imo no dj has any excuses for mixing poorly, the odd mistake is fair enough but when you hear some dj's that continuously fuck up every time they play youve gotta wonder why theyre still getting booked anywhere, as for every dj thats struggling to hold a mix theres 100's of wannabes that can. just listen to one of the many internet radio stations or mixes posted on various message boards and the standards of a lot of dj's are generally very good, often better than what youll pay £15 to go out and see playing out.

The reason for this is illegal downloading, people can now get the tunes they heard when out, so next time there out there already bored of the tunes they would have liked probably for years back in the day.

So basically tunes are never new for long anymore, which inturn makes people get bored of dj's and going out as much.

Who ever said illegal downloading hasn't harmed the industry is stupid.
