The wife has an acer aspire netbook, about a year old, its been no bother, its asking me to update windows with vista service pack 1, its all genuine etc. It just hangs on the update on 0%, I've left it for a couple of hours a few times with no joy. Anyone got any ideas whats wrong with the little fucker?
Try downloading and installing the service pack on it's own, without using windows update? You can grab the full download (about 430mb) here: http://www.microsoft.com/download/en/details.aspx?displaylang=en&id=30 Once it's installed Windows Update should recognize it and stop trying to download it.
I've done that and the installation fails. It keeps Blue-Screening aswell. Fuck knows what's wrong with it. I'll have to have a mess about with it.
Still hasn't blue screened again, it installs the service pack, then restarts then it gets to about 7% and say the service pack can't be loaded and boots from a restore point, havent a fucking clue.
In my experience the best thing to do in these situations is to just back up everything important, format the computer and re-install windows. Probably best to give windows 7 a blast as well while you're at it! Kind of like Vista that works. If it continues to blue screen, it's possibly the ram -all of my blue screens which weren't fixed by a fresh windows install were, anyway.
It was quite annoying wasn't it. I missed out a vital step. When you come to format your computer, partition the hard drive. You can create more than one partition. Make a slightly smaller volume and stick windows on there. That way the larger partition with all your important shit on doesn't have to be backed up somewhere next time you come to do this. I end up formatting my computer every few months or so, keeps it nice and sweet.
