anybody know owt about speakers workings? got a pair of mackie passives and one's only working like a sub, no mid or hi. is it worth taking the backs off em and having a poke about or best left to someone who knows a bit?

There's two possible main causes of failure - you've either blown a speaker (probably the tweeter) or you've blown the crossover.

It's also possible you have a loose wire inside the speaker (but unlikely). There's no harm in taking the back off to have a look.

The crossover is a little circuit board inside your speaker which effectively "chops" the sound into two parts - mid and bass (which goes to the woofer speaker), and hi (which goes to the tweeter).

If you've got a multi-meter, it's worth taking the back off it and measuring the voltage from the wires going to both of the speakers from the crossover (woofer and tweeter).

If you get a voltage through both of the wire pairs, then your speaker is blown and needs replacing. If you don't get any voltage through the wires, the crossover board has gone and needs changing.

If you have a pair of the speakers, the other thing you can do is try taking the backs off both and swapping the crossover over, then try swapping the tweeter over. From that you can work out what has blown (if anything).
