    "Black Music"

I don't get it - why is it still called black music?

Fair enough, thats it's origins and that, but in this day and age of political correctness it hardly seems very PC!

I mean....If loads of other music was called white music, there would be a huge uproar about it!

I'm not really arsed about it...just thought it was a point worth raising :D

    Anybody got any thoughts?

I prefer the term 'black music' to the pc term 'urban music' but both are pretty outdated.

There are big cultureal difference between afro-american and anglo-american cultures... namely down to the white oppression of the afro-americans for a very long time.

To ignore these differences for the sake of being politically correct is madness... Why shouldn't there be a black music? Its not an offensive term and to be at the stage where we can recognisethat afro-americans contrbute to american society can only be seen as an achievement.

Your arguement is about as silly as saying, why do we call china town china town... if we called the rest of newcastle white town there'd be blood on the streets.... Its the same logic - in america the black race is a minority, by labeling a genre black music your not discriminating - your merely recognising.

I see, so calling something black music is recognising, and calling something white music is gonna get blood on the streets?

I wasn't arguing anyway, merely pointing something out, people are always prattling on about political correctness, yet its still called "black music"...some would say that this excludes other races! I don't....mostly cos I dont like all the urban stuff anyway, but some would.

Interesting to see other peoples views thats all!

    What??

I didn't underestimate or disrespect it at all, did you actually bother to read the thread? You have majorly jumped to a wrong conclusion!!

I was questioning the fact that in this day and age of everything having to be politically correct, calling something specifically "black music," by todays standards, is not politically correct!

Thats all - not at all underestimating or disrespecting it, or slagging anything off. There is obviously great talent out there, fair enough its not my thing, but asking a question regarding the political correctness of a name of a group of genres is hardly a negative thing.

Some people may feel that being called "black music," it doesn't open up to other groups.

    My opinion...

"Black music" stems largely from oppression, murder, torture, rape and many other attrocities mostly commmited by white people.

Let them call it what the fuck they want. :)

The biggest selling black music act of the past decade is Eminem.

The biggest selling black music act ATM (Spences avatar) is a ex-crack dealer whos biggest brag is that he's been shot 17 times!

    ROLE MODEL OR WHAT?

    bizarre :spangled:

it's not racist or even non-PC to call something black when it is black!

pussyfooting around it and calling blacks "coloured" is plain ridiculous
