Telephone Banking I rang Lloyds to cancel a direct debit and the fella told me i need to answer some questions to enable telephone banking so i said ok. his first question was, what is the 16 digit number on your bank card, now i know ive rang him but theres no way im giving anyone that 16 digit number, i work for barclays and we would never ask our customers to confirm that number. am i just being paranoid here or is that a bit strange :spangled:
They dont ask you that as a security question. Thier number is 08453000000 They ask you to confirm a transaction on your account, like a cashpoint withdrawal yesterday, then a question like can you name a DD on your account, or is you account a joint or sole account They would NEVER ask for that. You were right not to give it to them.
Re: Re: Telephone Banking I wouldnt deal with those companies you deal with then!!! imagine on a separate call you gavce them your expiry date too? I would check your statements if i were you.
Re: Re: Re: Telephone Banking They cant do anything with just the card number can they If someone who worked for a bank really wanted to get my card number then they could If you dont feel any confidence in the companies you deal with then you really should move provider, Im more than happy with the customer service i recieve
Re: Re: Re: Telephone Banking the odds of speaking to the same person again are massively high you must work with some absolute scoundrels if you hold these opinions in my 6 years of working for Orange , I only knew of 1 person who got caught using a customers credit card details....and the security behind the scenes is very high
Re: Re: Re: Re: Telephone Banking not if they're indian callcentres. the amount of fraudulent use of credit and debit cards had gone thru the roof with companies goin over to india. they are not regulated by dpa or the like. a company would never usually ask for your full card number to register for internet banking or for security because it is a security risk in itself. the fsa give guidelines to financial companies on what should be used for id confirmation and ya card details are not one of them.
Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Telephone Banking yes they do HSBC Mint Intelligent Finance First Direct are 4 companies I use that have asked for the card number at some point on their web banking system HSBC are the only ones out of those companies who have indian call centres and i have only ever spoken to a nonbritish person once I'm not doubting there are risks but its just as risky ringing up and buying goods over the phone/buying over the internet with a card.....especially as alot of companies still process their orders manually offline (i.e. the transaction isnt fully automated through the website)
Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Telephone Banking I'm with hsbc and all they ask for on internet banking with me is my ib number, they then ask for your dob and 3 numbers from your security number. cannot comment on the others but you are on about secure web banking, not telephone banking. like i say, from workin in financial services i guarantee its not fsa compliant to ask for a card number on the phone as a security question or even at all. anyone could have your card and read them the number from it.
Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Telephone Banking I was responding to this.... "a company would never usually ask for your full card number to register for internet banking or for security because it is a security risk in itself." Lets start again..... They have never asked me the card number as a security question, they have asked me it to identify me. They then ask me things like DOB , Mothers maiden name etc. Like you said, it would be pointless to ask someone their card number for a security question because the chances are, if someone is ringing up trying to obtain information about an account, then they would have the card number anyway.
Re: Re: Re: Re: Telephone Banking yeah same here, im not saying I dont feel confident in the companies i deal with. Im saying if the ones you deal with ask for your card number i wouldnt feel comfortable dealing with them.
thats why its very strange that they would ask for his card number and not his account number to register for telephone banking.
Thats not unusual Lee, My credit card company ask for it everytime i ring because its my account number with them, aswell as my visa number. Whoever said they'd never ask for your full security number was right. They also won't ask for your pin.
aye thats it, if its a credit card then thats your accnt no but if its a bank accnt they wont ask for your card no. lucy used to work for lloyds tsb and said the same. everytime she calls the bank now she gets thru to india and they ask her for things or tell her procedures and she like "erm...no...i think you'll find....." companies are startign to realise that shiftin to india was a bad idea no matter how much they save.
