At the end of the day its about personal choice, I made the choice not to steal as its not a victumesless crime whereas drinking and smoking underage only affects yourself. I dont mind people breaking the law as such its just when other people are affected that i like to get on my high horse, I know a lot of Producers and artists who cant afford to live of what they make out of music anymore, and its a shame cos in the end its gonna mean a lot less music for us all

Coletrickle i do agree with your point about it affecting the artists, at present its too easy for people to illegally download music/movies. Its now up to the artists and everyone affected to find ways to stop it! Like it mentions earlier on in the thread about tagging Mp3's so any dodgy ones won't play on new players...

But can they actually do it?

I doubt it. As with everything, people find ways around it - fast.

No it doesn't just affect yourself, the person that served you or gave you the alcohol or cigarettes would get fined and/or prosecuted, that's not very victimless now is it?

where did you get that info from? Single sales are down 80% over the last 10 years and i think album sales have had a similar fate, yes they are up like 3% or somrthing stupid ove rthe last year or two but the fact is a lot of the sammler bands and artists struggle these days due to the massive drop in music sales.

No, it's your fault for trying to get served, they didn't walk into your house and sell you it, did they?

@ Teknofish - spot on there, I got hold of Coldplay's X&Y almost 3 weeks before it came out, and as you can see the sales were very low...

Single sales dropping... that has nowt to do with music channels, albums being more expensive, more radio stations, etc, at all then...

You should work at the BPI.

As an ex bar manager i owuld blame bar staff 100% for not iding anyone they think is 21 or under, I dont belive the underage drinker is victmising the bar staff i feel its a bar staff duty to ID people

Anyway i dont wanna argue about this, I buy music and if no body did then you would have no music to download, So you continue to steal music and i will continue to buy it and we are both happy, END OF

Odd that, I continue to share music, plus I continue to buy it, strangely enough buying music from those smaller bands that are apparently struggling...

Oh, and as an ex bar/pub/club manager, I agree with that, but it's also illegal for anyone under the age limits to either be in a bar area, or to attempt to get served.

illegally downloading an mp3 is no different to walking in to a record shop and nicking a 12"

Illegally downloading an mp3 isn't just a case of 'same as stealing it from a shop'. Like I said before, lots of mp3's downloaded are unknown to the user downloading them and it's more of a try-before-you-buy method. If it's shit, you don't want to listen to it again and there would have been no point in forking out £15 for it. If its ok but nowt special this time round, then you still wouldn't have bought it (so technically, nobody is losing money again but the artist probably gains some credit and the person who downloaded it would probably be aware of new stuff released by this artist so potentially gaining more fans/customers). If it's great then fair enough i agree you should buy the music as this falls into the category where you probably would have bought the cd in the shops if you couldn't have got it for free. You can't apply the statement 'it's the same as stealing from HMV' to every mp3 that someone downloads 'illegally' though purely because of the fact that you wouldn't be stealing a cd you'd never heard of.

Like Dodgy and I said before, this try-before-you-buy method, whatever the outcome of opinion on the artist, is probably responsible for loads of lesser-known artists rise in poularity. I can't see smaller DJ's becoming well known as quickly as they do with 'illegal' downloads if in the future everyone is expected to buy their music with the help of some pot luck in the music store. It'll be the usual mainstream stuff that's played on galaxy that takes the lead in the dance world and nobody is going to want to buy stuff they've never had a chance to hear before. This includes taping stuff, borrowing stuff and copying cd's from friends since that is exactly the same as mp3 downloading. Only difference is as soon as theres a statistic to prove something its suddenly the #1 crime in the music world.

You can go to a record shop to sample music or listen to an online sample that ALL artist sites have these days, Dont give me this shit that people download to try it and then buy it if they like it... never happens

For me buying records online , a 45 second clip is often not long enough to be able to deduce if it is worth £7 so if I am undecided then I will download a full copy for evaluation purposes. If its good I buy it , if its not i wont but the MP3 will be deleted whatever the decision.

I dont see anything wrong with that :)
