    My Word!

You've heard of the Bigg Market, the Quayside and the Pink Triangle. Now the latest gem in Newcastle's sparkling nightlife is the Diamond Strip.

Trendy bars along Collingwood and Mosley Streets want to see their area recognised and have suggested the new name as a starting point.

Recently, a string of bars have sprung up along the roads, transforming the area into a thriving social scene.

As well as the Revolution Vodka bar, the exclusive members' bar Apartment opened last summer closely followed by The Attic just before Christmas. Even Geordie duo Ant and Dec have cashed in on the boom by snapping up what was Jonny Ringo's and renaming it The Lodge.

George Elliott, general manager of The Attic, where Justin Timberlake recently enjoyed a tipple, is behind the plans.

Mr Elliott said: "People immediately recognise areas such as the Bigg Market and the Quayside, but we don't have a particular name for the area. Yet it has some of the best and busiest venues.

"What we want is to get the council to recognise this area as The Diamond Strip and try and get some signage to highlight that, so it becomes a properly defined area of the city.

"With us opening in December, Apartment, Bar Luga and Bar 55, this strip has really lengthened and can't really be called the Central Station area any more. We need an identity like the other social pockets in the city. It will undoubtedly help raise the profile of Newcastle.

"The Diamond Strip idea came after I met people at Revolution and Apartment. There's a affluent area in Malaga, in Spain, called the Diamond Strip so we thought it appropriate."

Ryan Green, promotions manager at Revolution, backed the plan. He said: "We are an extremely popular part of the city and offer some of the smartest venues so it's time we had an identity of our own."

Dont understand this obsession in newcastle with "bigging up" the slightest thing that happens or opens, as if it suddenly converts the town into something new and fresh.

As much as i like going out - Newcastle of an evening is just a boozers night out,... Ive seen more culture in a pot of Yoghurt.

    :D

I suppose calling the area 'station' encompasses all the bars up pink lane, w/spoons etc....and theyre not nearly trendy enough to be associated with the 'diamond strip' now are they...
